    night time at pond...quiet

    Rita:

     Camera Stuck??? guess so!

Wyoming, don't fret about it. It was a discussion on why some were no longer able to post here...that can lead to long debates that belong on a different thread...

If moved would we know where to?

Guess Hide having trouble posting as we haven't heard anything from them in a while, esp about stuck cam...I thought it was my mind...being stuck in one gear, and going nowhere.

THere's lots of splashing going on, but no ripples that I can see...

I'm singing this map...Ooooh the blue bits are the water, the green bits are the land, the brown is where the mountains are....(from the Goons)

Sorry Rita, guess I am not really worried, but am definitely confused. The folks who are not longer able to post are the most on topic of all of us. Like I said...murky.

Stuck cam...but I hoave to get back to the ol' job anyway.

BTW, I didn't happen to notice any long debates. An explanation would have been appreciated however :)) Guess I missed it?

    Re: For Mary at NGS

I have been thinking about this. And I decided that I don't really get it. With the exception of the occasional drift away from topic, I thought this forum didn't get particularly off topic. And that usually happens at a time like right now.  And usually someone throws out a reminder and all it back on track. I thinks folks have been pretty good:) So is relating a story that didn't happen at the pond but might relate to the pond off topic? could get murky:)

On topic...quiet at the pond. Insects and a bit of splashing.

     Oh drat, H. Palmer.

The email I sent explained the off topic deletion and invited to you to post more of your lovely Pond related poetry. Your work is wonderful (I checked out your Web site). I'm sure all members would enjoy reading your work here in the forum.

Have you attempted to update your email address in your profile?

    Thanks,

    Mary

     Hi Everyone,

I have requests from members to reserve this thread for Sightings and Animal Sounds at Pete's Pond. I have removed or moved to another thread posts that are off topic in an effort to keep the conversation moving toward Pete's Pond.  I need your help with this to be consistent.

Having said that, Happy Birthday, Michele, enjoy!

    Mary, NGS

Then why are the birthday wishes still here? I'm confused about this policy at the moment.

Happy birthday, Michelle! I guess it is ok for that to be off topic.

My apologies.  I will certainly stop posting poems to the forum.  Most of the newer ones will be availble in book form soon anyway.

    Thanks,

    Palmer

    Re: Dancing Elephants

I love your poem HPalmer - thanks for sharing it with us. I don't think I saw this little elephant interaction, but I can see it in my mind, through your words!!

yes and my message went through. said they'll be here in a few hours..

Excellent!  Looks like the elands are waiting for them to show up!

Am going to have to pack up the laptop in a minute, so have a great birthday, Michelle, and have a great day/evening everyone!  Will be back home tomorrow!

eta:  Just saw your poem, HPalmer, and enjoyed it very much.  I have seen similar actions between ellies, and it's lovely, isn't it?  When I get home, will try to do a search and see if I can find video of that or similar moments somewhere on YouTube.  It's wonderful to see.  Thanks for your poem, which reminded me.

    Dancing Elephants

Several months ago, I was privileged to watch two elephants--one a large bull or female, the other about 2/3 of the first one's size.  I was amazed at what I saw and was plesed that at least one other person, Afke, was watching at the same time.  No one caught it on a video thoughI suspect its captured in the NGS archives somewhere.  Here's what I wrote about that night:

    A Sense of Style

This was not Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

They had less grace, less sense of style:

two elephants, one large, the other small—

not a baby, maybe two thirds the other’s size—

wheeled in circles for a while, their trunks

stroked each other’s sides and heads and

    intertwined just once.

    An act of love?

Or an act of art? They circled to the right,

clockwise, nimble footwork for their weight.

And after a minute, maybe two, they stopped

the dance and walked together into the night.

Two elephants in the African night, danced

to some rhythm we cannot know, acted

out some urge they graced us with the chance

to see, some ancient rite, instinctive perhaps—

some ritual played out in the dark night.
